  1. A dumpster is a great example of an alternative archive. An alternative archive is a place that isn't always considered to be an archive. Many people wouldn't consider an archive to be a dumpster. These people are wrong. An archive is a place that contains many different types of information. A dumpster may seam to only hold peoples trash but you could learn a lot about a place or a person from the type of stuff inside a dumpster. Such as if you were in a richer community maybe they are more careless about what they throw away because they can always just buy something new if it gets thrown away. And possible in a poorer neighborhood people are more conservative of what they throw away because they always cant afford to just be careless and throw things away. If you were to go through a dumpster you could probably learn a lot about the area that you are in or about the people. Another example of an alternative archive that could be used in you research project could be a persons car. Everybody keeps different stuff in their car, whether it be snacks, trash, clothes, its all different. I for one keep a lot of clothes in my car because you never know if you'll need an extra sweatshirt or shoes and you are not near home. I think a car is another great example of an alternative archive.

    1. I agree that a car is a good example of an alternate archive. I would never think to look in a car for artifacts but you could find a lot of information about the person who drives the car. You could also tell if they are more organized or messy.

  2. An alternative archive is a place where people usually would not go to find important artifacts. Some people, such as collectors, consider almost everywhere they can collect information an archive. After reading "On Dumpster Diving" a dumpster is an Alternative archive because as Eighner said, he got most of his needs from dumpsters when he was homeless. so, for some people, dumpsters is what keeps people alive when they are homeless. For my research project an alternative archive would be the kitchen and the living room at the fire station, since that is a common place they hangout. I could find out what kindof tv shows, movies, and games they play. Also i could find out what kind of foods and drinks they all enjoy.

    1. I like your point that dumpsters keep some people alive when they are homeless. we don't know what its like to have to live on the streets and just the littlest bit of shelter could be home to someone who doesn't have a home. i like your alternative archives for you project. you can tell alot about a person from their living room

    2. The whole homeless point is good, and I feel like it is a good idea to go to the kitchen and living room to see what's going on and soft of see the some what relaxed side of the job

    3. I really liked your idea about the archive that could be helpful for your project. Those two places are where the firefighters aren't actively doing something so they can tell a lot about who they are as people and not just as firefighters.

  3. After reading “On Dumpster Diving” I learned a great deal on why dumpsters are an alternative archive. To most of us, dumpsters are a place to throw away things that aren’t needed anymore. However to Lars Eighner dumpsters mean everything to him For example, many people disregard healthy/useable objects and throw them in the dumpster. Lars Eighner actually scavenges through a number of dumpsters daily finding life essentials. He found beddings, toilet paper, medicine, books, dishes, money, etc. just from the dumpsters he scavenged through. By scavenging through dumpsters around a college campus, Lars Eighner also discovered that college students throw away so many useable items during breaks. He states that the dumpsters around colleges are very rich with useable items. Dumpsters also hide inside them canned goods, bread, drinks, yogurt, etc. If someone has no money to spend of food, a dumpster can be perfect fit for someone to eat.

One alternatice archive that could be useful in my research project in the Brockton District Courthouse is the security check. Before entering the courthouse every person has to go through the security check making sure they aren’t a harm to themselves or the people around them. The security check is a very important archive making sure every one is the building is safe and secure while inside.

  4. An alternative archive is a place where people wouldn't really go to search for artifacts. after reading "On Dumpster Diving" I realized that a dumpster can be an alternative archive. I always viewed it as a place to throw your trash away and not much more. But as I read on I realized how a dumpster can be an archive. it sure helped Eighner out a lot while he was homeless. Dumpsters meant the whole world to Eighner. they provided necessitates from him to live off. Especially dumpsters around a college campus where Eighner was searching around. He said college students threw away a lot of valuable items such as food, bedding etc which would be good for him so he had food to eat.

  5. Reading “dumpster diving” I learned how it could be an alternative archive. I never would have thought you could use someone’s trash to learn about them. The saying one man’s trash is another man’s treasure is the way I think of it when I was reading this essay. The author would only take what’s important and stay away from the bad food. You learn from the good stuff and the bad. The author could tell you all about the people that through away the objects in the trash because of what was in it. An alternative archive I could use for my paper is an online, maybe a data base where I learn about other veterans offices. I could see the difference from ours and the other schools and see who they help.

  6. After reading "On Dumpster Diving" by Lars Eighner, I learned how a dumpster can be an alternative archive. Most people assume that a dumpster just holds garbage created by people, but what's in the dumpster could be important to someone else. Many others like him, Eighner was homeless and the trash that came from a dumpster kept him alive because of the food and clothes that were thrown away. A dumpster is a great example of an alternative archive.

A place that would be an alternative archive for my project would be a place where the counselors at the counseling center go to relax, maybe a break room of theirs. You can see what techniques they use to talk to people and how their day is going.

  7. After reading "On Dumpster Diving" by Lars Eighner, I learned how important alternative archives are to ethnographys. I never realized that something that you don't need anymore can be useful for someone else. I watch shows like extreme cheapskates, and they will search through dumpsters to get old furniture and clothes for example. I think society today looks down on people for dumpster diving. Another example is extreme couponing when they jump in dumpsters for a dollar off toothpaste. I understand that you don't always have everything you need and sometime you have to go to extremities to get necessities. When he was talking about gathering life essentials by scavenging through the dumpster in a way I felt bad. I think it's important being a college student to look at this and think about what we actually throw away can be like a phone upgrade while people on the streets don't have a cell phone. I feel like we take everything for granted and he shows us that everything we have is valuable and to respect and appreciate things more.

One alternative archive that I feel will be important in my research project is the OA shovel. Easton is know for the Ames brothers shovel company where they made shovels and a fortune. They are really important to my hometown and the name of my high school.

  8. After reading "On Dumpster Diving," I got a great sense of why a dumpster is such a great alternative archive. An alternative archive is defined as someone else's junk that could mean treasure to another. That is what the dumpster is doing exactly in this essay. While Lars Eighner used the dumpster and everything that he found to help feed himself and clothe himself he also learn about the people who threw it away, about whether the food was good or bad and why the things he found were thrown out. The dumpster was a treasure to the author by helping him survive on things other people would think of as junk.

An alternative archive that i could use for my paper could be just the guidance counselor's desk. They tend to look messy most of the time but I could probably learn more about what things they have going on within all the paper work, models, and stress relievers scattered everywhere.

  10. After reading "On Dumpster Diving" by Lars Eighner I learned that a dumpster is a alternative archive. It never hit me until reading this that it's true that another mans trash is another mans treasure. When I throw out things it doesn't occur to me that I'm throwing away something that another person is in need of. Some people throw away food that still good, clothes, books, dishes, and furnishes that can be worth some money, that's what helped Lars live his life of being homeless. One alternative archive that I feel like I can use for my ethnography is the teachers lounge they have in the Children's Center. I can get a sense of who the teachers really are outside of the class room. The link below is a picture of what the Children Center's lounge looks like. It's not actually it but it gives you a sense of what a teacher lounge is.

  11. A dumpster was a perfect example of an alternate archive because of all that it tells about a location even though it is just a dumpster. It is not a normal archive that most people would assume could tell them about the environment they are studying. In “On Dumpster Diving,” Lars Eighner shows exactly how a dumpster could tell a lot about the surrounding environment such as when he talked about a dumpster near a college campus. He talks about when certain foods or drinks where thrown out the most and when there were an abundance of foods and drinks, which gives us a great picture or idea of the surrounding environment. Another great example was when Lars talked about the beers or wines thrown out before Dad’s Day which helps me picture a bunch of college kids cleaning out there rooms making sure there is nothing illegal in their room and making sure it looks nice for their parents. These examples and many more are why a dumpster was a great alternative archive.
The chair located next to the assistant coach is an alternative archive for my location. Throughout the basketball game this seems to be the hot seat, and it tells a lot about the environment even though it is just a chair. If a player sits there after being taken out he could be getting yelled at or told what to do, or a player could be brought there to catch his breath before going into the game. This chair is probably the most active area between coaches and players that there is in a game. Besides the head coach yelling out plays or what to do to his players playing in the game, this is where most of the communicating between a coach and a player happens. This chair tells a lot about the culture and routines that happen during a college basketball game.

  12. A dumpster can be a very good alternative archive because when people buy things they make a personal choice to buy them. The things that people buy can in many way describes many aspects of their lives. Therefore looking in a dumpster can do the same because at some point they have to throw the things away. I think that an alternative archive in my community would be the back storage rooms because people wouldn't think to go back there and see whats going on they would one to see the actual therapy. I think this could help me get perspective of how clean they are, how they store and clean the tools and how prepared they are for something to break.

    1. I agree with what your saying because a dumpster can hold a variety of things that can describe a person and their life.

  13. A dumpster can be an alternative archive by containing objects that tell the diver the kind of people who live around the area. For example, Eighner talked about the kinds of things that get thrown into the dumpsters in the areas near universities, and he knows that many of the items like the food that is still good and the drugs and alcohol come from the affluent students because they get thrown out around breaks because they think that the food will go bad and they get rid of the drugs and alcohol before an event on campus when parents visit or after a party on the weekends. These items, and the many more that he finds, tells a lot about the people who throw them out.
An alternate archive that can be useful to my research project is a sports bag belonging to one of the women’s basketball players. Looking through the bag before a game can tell me how the player prepares before the game and what they need to bring with them. Also, the player could have an unusual object in her bag such as a charm for good luck or a picture of someone special.

I forgot to add the link that I wanted to use. This is an example of what can be found in a bag of a basketball player. The planner could show that the person is busy and likes to keep things organized. Also, it could be possible that they have a ball with them because they like to use only that specific ball instead of one that someone else brings.

  14. After reading, “On Dumpster Diving” Lars Eighner uses a Dumpster as an alternative archive because it had a deep meaning in his life before he even became homeless. When we think of a Dumpster the first thing that comes to mind are dirty, smelly items piled up. We do not think about Dumpster diving because we know that food and their personal items are thrown away for a reason. After Lars scavenging he found necessities that he can still use such as books, dishes, clothes, food and money. He mentions that he learned a lot as a scavenger as well because it revealed the behavior and rules of the city or town itself.

  15. " On Dumpster Diving" by Lars Eighner was a great alternative archive for him because it helped him while he was homeless and even before he was homeless.Dumpster to me is trash that we don't need in our daily lives or even disgusting things like old food. But, with Eighner he uses dumpster for his daily life survival or even find things that could help him in different ways. Since he was homeless he found many foods in a dumpster. Earlier today i looked in a trash and all i seen was paper and food. With that being said if a homeless person went dumpster diving around Bridgewater they could eat. Colleges play a big role in dumpster diving.

  16. After reading On Dumpster Diving by Lars Eighner, a dumpster can be seen as an alternative archive because it offers different information regarding the dumpster. The dumpster holds information about the people who live around the dumpster. For example, a dumpster in a rich neighborhood would be different from a dumpster in a poor neighborhood. Another example of an alternative archive would be a person's office. If they have pictures on their desk, then you know that they are family orientated. You can tell many things about a person and the way they keep their desk. Unlike in elementary school when you had desk checks and were force to keep your desk clean, having a desk as an adult it is an option to keep your desk clean. A clean desk shows that the person is organized and focused , whereas a messy desk shows that their unfocused or have a lot of things on their mind.

  17. Archives are collections of documents and artifacts. In "Dumpster Diving" a dumpster can be an alternative archive because it has a collection of artifacts or documents. Eighner used to the dumpster to for survival with the collection of foods or things that could help him survive.

  18. After reading "On Dumpster Diving" by Lars Eighner a dumpster is an alternative archive because the things you'll find in there are endless. To begin, an archive is a collection of documents and artifacts. In other words, an archive is a source of information that withstands time. A dumpster is a perfect example of an archive because the information within it may be endless. It can hold trash, food, clothes, dishes, furnishings, etc. It represents the lives of surrounding people, it even show what people value or their behaviors. Another example of an archive I could use within my research would be a person's briefcase. I think a briefcase would be a good example because a briefcase can withhold many artifacts that people ma value such as paperwork for your job, photos of your family, a phone charger, money or snacks. All depending on who the person is anything could be found in their briefcase.

  19. After reading "On Dumpster Diving" I have learned that a Dumpster can be considered an Alternative archive because of the things that you can find in one. The author found clothes, food, books, dishes, change and etc that once were used by other people, but this is an alternative archive because people wouldnt expect to go dumpster diving. An archive that could be useful to my project is pictures, billboards, awards and things that could give away the history of the Children's Center. I think the billboards and awards can prove a lot about how the place was before it was offically known as a daycare center.

  20. After reading "On Dumpster Diving" by Lars Eighner, a dumpster can be an alternative archive because it is a new look or different way of getting information. From what is tossed in the dumpster you can tell a lot about that person. From what they eat, wear, ect. Eigner used the dumpster as a new means of living. He survived off the trash of others. For example, if you go into someones bedroom just from looking at what is in it and around in the room you can learn a lot about the person. Say their trash is over flowing or their is clothes scattered all over the room. From this, you can tell that the person living in the room is sort of messy. Maybe they have pictures of family and friends meaning they are family/friend oriented. So anything with artifacts representing or giving information towards a person or culture can be an archive. In the case of the essay a dumpster can be an archive because the collection of garbage or artifacts in the dumpster offer you different information on a culture or person then you would have gotten from being in their work space or home.

An alternative archive for my research I could use would be a kennel or dog crate.

  21. The essay "On Dumpster Diving" is a very good way of portraying an alternative archive. What do we do when we are done with something like food? We throw it out! This is our garbage or used goods that he uses to live and survive. Although the meat of the essay was about food (no pun intended), he also found clothes and other artifacts that he would use in his life. I was intrigued to hear his thought process with all the types of foods he came across and their condition. He also benefits from local pizza stores and the college academic calendar which I found humorous. He knew that the pizza store's old pizzas were useless to them, but it was interesting to see their reaction to weather or not he was the one making the bogus pizza calls. Even though they had to get rid of them, they didn't want someone benefiting off their loss.

During a flight lesson, the instructor should always have a lesson plan so the lesson will stay organized. After the flight is over, I plan to look at these old lesson plans that are no use to the flight crew anymore and reconstruct the lesson. This is an example of a alternative artifact to help me when I am teaching.

  22. A dumpster can be an alternative archive because it is not necessarily yours or holds any value for any personal reason. It can be a way to learn about other cultures and learn about other people's lives and what they do. It can also what showed value before and now no longer holds that same value because it has been thrown away, but for someone else they might feel it holds value still in a certain way. An example of an alternative archive would be a storage locker. There are a lot of shows will people biding for the storage hoping to find something of value to sell it to a collector or just keep it.

  23. A dumpster is an alternative archive because even though it is filled with trash it still tells something about the people who use it. To explain, an archive is any documents or artifacts that give information about a certain culture. I'm sure a parking lot dumpster and a dumpster behind a restaurant would contain very different artifacts that would show the differences between those cultures. another alternative archive would be someone's laptop or computer. almost all personal computer hold files upon files of peoples personal information whether it be a netflix subscription to tax files. they are such good archives in fact that they are a gold mine for prosecutors in the court when trying to convict a felon. the vast amount of information they contain about a certain person or a group of people makes it a great archive.

  24. Normally, people wouldn't consider a dumpster to be an alternative archive. People may not think of looking in a dumpster for useful objects. By going through a dumpster near a pizza place, the author was able to determine which consumers waste more food and are ideal for scavenging from, which in this case were students. When scavenging through trash, he is careful not to judge the consumers by their waste, whether its pills, documents, or other personal items. To scavengers, dumpster diving is a lifestyle. They consider it an art. An alternative archive that could be useful in my research project is a couch because the counseling center is a place where people come to feel comfortable while they are getting counseled and venting to them. Comfort can help the person feel as if they can really open up to the counselor.

  25. From the dumpster diving reading I learned that dumpsters are considered to be alternative archives because it is not something that is commonly used as research. And every dumpster depending on location is different. Consisting of different artifacts and uses. He specifically did dumpster diving as a way to survive and admits that it isn't wonderful but has noticed patterns and has worked hard in the art since he became homeless. You can learn a lot about a place due to the dumpsters.
I think a good archive I can use are the records signed outside hanging up in the hallway entrance of the radio station. It would be good to investigate the history of these artifacts and hopefully help me learn more about the station.

  26. Archives are places where people can find useful items or something that comes across as important to them. A dumpster may not be an alternative archive to everyone, but in "On Dumpster Living," the author says that many of the items he had found in dumpsters were of need to him. Many places can be alternative archives, it just depends on the person. A second example of an alternative archive could be a daycare. where kids can find toys and snacks that they enjoy, but not everyone might enjoy this. It comes as an importance to the kids who go there.

  27. When I first read the title "On Dumpster Living" the first thought I had was that the was going to be something about trash and disgusting. I think after I read this my thoughts about a dumpster being an alternative achieve changed because I never realized how important they are. I think what you find in a dumpster or a trash can say a lot about your business as well as the individual. I think that this is important because he discusses that he doesn't judge a person by what they are throwing away or how much they throw away. In the business I chose I think what I would find is a lot of paper work and this would be an alternative archive because it would show just how busy this business gets in one day.

  28. After reading we learn that a dumpster can be a great source of information. We learn that the dumpster can be considered as an alternative archive. It's an alternative archive because it's not what you would typically use for research. Relating back to the story going to the dumpster isn't a typical place to look for food. With that being said you won't always find good information and you will have to do some searching. Also no dumpster is the same providing different information at every location.

  29. After reading "On Dumpster Diving" I realized that what others consider trash, some look at it as a way to get by. An alternate archive is a setting in which people normally would not go to find artifacts. The alternate archive in this passage would be the Dumpster itself, it shows a lot about the people and the things they don't value and just throw away. Eighner talks about how when he was homeless, these dumpsters were the things that kept him alive. An alternative Archive for my project would be in the library of the school. In this library there are pictures and artwork made by the students at the school I am observing.

  30. An alternate archive is a place where people wouldn't normally go to find artifacts. After reading "On Dumpster Diving", I learned that a dumpster can be an alternate archive. A dumpster can tell you a lot of information about the people who live in the area. It can tell you the kind of items they use daily, what kind of food they eat, or if it is a rich or poor neighborhood. A dumpster shows what people no longer need or value. Another alternate archive would be someone's desk. You can tell from the desk if the person is organized or messy. You can tell a little bit about their background or family from pictures. You can also tell the kind of work they do based on the papers on their desk. People wouldn't normally think to use a desk as an archive but it could have a lot of useful information.

The reason is there are a lot of memorable things on the desk like pictures and plaques which describes the type of person he is and the things he values.

  33. There are many places that could be alterenative archives that you would definitely not think of. They are not the first thing you would think of to find out information about someone for a first source. My dad always uses the phrase "one man's trash is another man's treasure." and after reading this passage I find that totally true. Someone's trash could tell you some much about a person. You could find out about what they eat, what their style is and etc. An alternative archieve I could use for my research paper is maybe an old brochure and pictures.

  34. I would have never thought of a dumpster as being an archive. After reading "On Dumpster Diving" I discovered all the ways a dumpster can be used to gather information. Who knew that you could figure out so much about a place/person just from what is on their garbage. The garbage tells you a lot about the people living in that environment, from the food, they eat, clothes they wear, how much they spend(receipts) ,how wasteful they are etc, depending on the products you see within their trash. An alternative archive I can turn to while completing my ethnography project would be contacting an alumni like we discussed in class. Someone who graduated a CJ major and became what they set out to be. It would be great to speak with a person who once was sitting in the same chair I am and hear all about the steps they took to achieve their goals.

Link: How to Dumpster Dive .. pretty funny that they have actual steps to take....

  35. An Alternative archive is the like a secondary spot to find information, instead of going to the primary source you go to the completely unrelated one. The dumpster was one because it obtained many of the things that were necessary to live. One alternative archive that could be used is the Dunkins or the pizzeria which was located near the police station and they have all types of convos there and good interactions with kids and adults.
