Ethnography discussion Online class Assignment for Thursday

After reading the ethnography assignment sheet on our website please respond to the following:

1. What is your major (if it is undecided that is okay, just write it down)
2. What are your career interests? What jobs would you like to have in the future?
3. Make a list of at least three possible communities, groups, locations you could study for you ethnography this semester.

Post your responses in the comments by the end of the day Friday. Reply to at least two student comments by the end of the day Sunday. Keep in mind that this blog is for both sections of my 102 course so you will be having discussion with more than just the students in your class. This is great because it allows for more feedback.

  1. My major is Special Education, most likely high school level. In the future I would like to teach children that struggle with school work, help them to graduate high school, and help them look for a career that they are interested in. I would also like to someday become head of the special education department at a high school. Three possible communities I could observe are high schools, special ed programs, or daycares.

    1. I like your career interest because it shows that you don't only care about yourself but you also care about other people in the world that need help or have disabilities.

    2. I think its really great that you want to work with older teenagers/young adults to help them build a solid foundation for their future!

    3. I really think that a high school site would work best for your project since your career interests are working with high school students.

  2. My major is Criminal Justice. My career interest is law enforcement and some type of government agency. The jobs that i would like to have in the future is a Correctional Officer, State Trooper, Homicide Detective, or a Police Officer. Three possibilities i could study for ethnography are patrol police, Jail center, or police office.

    1. Gio, I have had a lot of students with these interests for their project. I can tell you the BSU police department will not let you observe their. However, the Bridgewater police department has been wonderful to my students in the past. Contact them. Do it as soon as possible. I would wait till next week though when the chaos from the storm has passed.

    2. Gio, we are both interested in the same field so maybe we could work together. I think we could help each other out.

    3. My cousin is a Correctional Officer and he loves his job. I also took an internship my senior year of high school with my local police station, so I would definitely look into doing something with the station!

    4. A friend of mine just became a field agent for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and loves his job. I think they have a local office in Boston you could check out.

    5. Your choice of major and career interests remind me of my sister’s interests. Her dream is to work for the government or as a correction officer. She says that she would love to work in the FBI or CIA but I don’t think the chances of that happening are very high, but you never know!

  3. Hayley these are all great ideas for your project. One thing you should do is start looking into a spot to observe now because you are going to need to get permission. I think it would be interesting to try and get into a classroom that has a special education teacher assisting. It might be good to look at because of the immersion of special education students into "regular classrooms". If you are living on campus I would contact the elementary school.

  4. My major is Communication Disorders. In the future I would like to speech pathologist or American Sign Language teacher, either way I want to work with children. American Sign Language is a real passion of mine and would probably focus my project on that. Some places I would study would be an American Sign Language classroom, a speech pathologist office and special ed classroom.

    1. Kerwyn, these are all great ideas. I think the speech pathologist office would be great. However, you should find one and contact asap because I am not sure if they would allow it and how much access you would get. While you won't be able to directly be in a room with patients, you might be able to gain an understanding of how the office operates and what the speech pathologist does on a daily basis.

      Delete
    2. A sign language teacher would be a good job, very well respected job too. It would be interesting to learn all the signs.

  5. My major is Communications (Film/Media Studies based). My career interests as of right now would be some sort of broadcaster, whether it's for sports, the news, etc. Three possibilities I could study would be the BSU Sports/TV broadcasting, BSU radio station, or my TV broadcasting class I am taking this semester. I think it would be too hard to try and contact a big news station in the area.

    2. I think being a part of the BSU radio station would be a great opportunity and you should take advantage of it!

    3. They are actually looking for people to work there I know someone who was a DJ for a little bit

      Delete
    4. Julia, you can't do your class because you are already part of that community. However, the radio station is a great idea. I have had people do that in the past and they really enjoyed. While you could get in to a bigger station in the area the travel might now fit into your schedule.

      Delete
    5. Working with the BSU station would be really cool and it would also give you solid experience.

    4. As I said to Gio, the Bridgewater police station has always been great with my students in the past. The BSU police will not allow you there.

  9. I am Majoring in aviation science. I love flying, and the environment around an airport. I especially love to travel and the ability to go around the country or the world as just a normal day at work. My goal is to become a captain for American Airlines or Delta Airways. 3. This is pretty sweet. After reading your interests, it makes me remember how I wanted to become a flight attendant ... so I could just travel a lot.

      Delete
    4. Landon- for this project you have to choose one location that you will spend the semester at. As for Logan- I do not think it is realistic for you to travel in there every week. Also, you won't get much access. However, what about New Bedford where BSU does it's flight program or maybe another small municipal airport?

      Delete
    5. It would be so amazing if you could make those dreams come true. Being able to travel around the world every day and get paid for it would be so much fun! I don’t know how the profession works, if you get to stay wherever you fly to for a day or two and enjoy wherever you are until you have another flight, or if you immediately have to fly to a different place, but either way it will be a great job to go to every day.

  11. My major is Aviation Science. My career interest is to fly commercial planes. Ever since I was younger I have wanted to fly and go fast. 1. Good way to start Shamila, follow your dreams. Who knows i might walk into to your smoothie shop one day.

      Delete
    2. SHamila- for this project you need to choose one location to spend the semester at. If you know of a smoothy shop that you can get to that is fine. You could also consider one of the many small local businesses in Bridgewater, as it requires the same skills you would have to use in you own business.

    3. As a psychology major, I think that being a counselor for children at a hospital is a really intriguing career!

      Delete
    4. Mary, that is such admirable work. Childrens hopsital has always been so good to my son. I think the idea of a pediatricians office is great. That is something local that can help you get an idea of what working with child on that level is like. There are privacy issues so you would not be able to do much beyond the waiting room and office, but you can learn a lot from speaking with patients waiting, docs, nurses, staff, and observing. You should contact an office asap to attain permission.

      Delete
    3. Jared- as you can see there are a lot of students interested in this field. Choosing a local municipal airport would be your best bet. Something like New Bedford or Plymouth. Logan is just going to be very chaotic with very limited access.

  19. My major is Psychology. I haven't really decided what my set career interest may be. I know that my goal at the end is to receive my Ph.D. I either want to become a psychologist, a clinical researcher, or maybe a college professor. Three places where I could study are psychology research lab, a psychology class, and a hospital.

    2. Olivia- I love your goal of earning a phd. As for this project, you could study a psychology course that is at the senior level because you are not a part of that yet. A hospital can be tough because of privacy laws, but you could see if you can study a pscyhologists office where you can talk with the staff and observe the office setting.

  20. My major is Elementary Education at the minute, I might change it but for the time being that is my major. If I stick with elementary education i would like to be either a pre-school/kindergarden teacher or a 2nd grade teacher. I would be happy with any job in child care. Three possible places that i could study are in a pre-school, in a day care or in an elementary school.

  21. I am an Aviation Management major. My focus is to become a corporate executive of some sort in said field, such as for the FAA, Massport, the Dept. Of Transportation, or even a private company. Recently I sat in on a meeting between the executives of a nonprofit organization and the Administrator and Aviation Planner of MassDot: Aeronautics Division. It was very insightful and I look forward to doing something similar with Massport or the FAA.

    1. Sidney, what were ideas you had for your ethnography? Is there a specific government office or private office in one of these fields that would let you study there? Since you live close to the city it opens up more options for you. I will say you cannot use Logan Airport as your community because you are already a part of it.

  22. My current major is Business Management with a concentration in Marketing. To be honest I’m not exactly sure what my career interests are. I usually see myself hopefully becoming a CEO or becoming a Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) for a successful company. Maybe even a bank investor. My dream job is to become an actor, but I doubt that’ll ever happen. All I know is that I want to be own boss and do lots of travel. Whatever career I end up with … I don’t want to like it. I want to love it. Three possible communities I could study are advertising agencies, banks, and actors.

    1. You picked three very interesting communities, but don't give up or doubt yourself and try studying an actor.

      Delete
    2. I agree with Angel about never giving up on your dreams. However, it is definitely wise to be realistic and have a back-up plan like you are working on. Also, it's good that you want to love what you do. It'll make working so much more enjoyable.

      Delete
    3. I defiantly think that a nearby bank would work best for your project just because there are lots of banks around.

    4. I think the actors would be cool to investigate and hang out with and see their process of production.

      Delete
    5. First of Khalil, don't you ever give up on your dreams. If you want to be an actor then go for it. As for your ethnography ideas, your need to pick a specific site. If you can find an ad agency that is conveniently located for you thats great. You could also do a local bank, while it won't be a big CEO, it is a place to start. Another option is to look into what the theatre department has going. If there is a big production happening this spring that can fit with out assignment schedule, you could do that.

  23. My major is Criminal Justice. My career interest is to join the coast guard after college with a bachelor’s degree. Hopefully with that I can get a higher position or even an officer position. Are those communities that interest you?

    3. I think a homeless shelter would be the most beneficial on both parts and it would be interesting to find out peoples stories and how they ended up there or what they want to do. I think that would be the best paper to write because you would have some much to work with.

      Delete
    4. Angel- Those are all very different ideas. I need you to think more about what you want to do with your life. Why are you in college? What jobs interest you? Career services would be a great place for you to go to help with this. Go and see them.

Three possible places or groups I could study would be the athletic department here at Bridgewater, a physical therapy clinic or facility or any community business to figure out how they work. I've also been around animals all my life. That being said I think the best places for me to maybe study would be a local vet office, animal clinic, or day care.

  35. Josiel, I think a vet office would be a great idea. You won't have as many privacy restrictions. I see a lot of potential with that topic. You should contact one asap for permission.

  36. I am a psychology major and although I do not know which route to take in the field of psych I am interested in researching and specifically developmental psychology. Possible areas where I can study for my ethnography are hospitals, research facilities and also psychology labs.

I am double majoring in Spanish and special education. I want to do
this because I feel like I should give back to the community since I
have had so many great teachers along the way. They haven't just been
teachers to me, but more like parents, and role-models who I have
looked up to my entire life. I want to show and prove to children with
disabilities that they can be completely independent and shape their
lives into whatever they want them to be like. The three observation
sites that I was thinking were a special education classroom, Spanish
classroom, or an after-school program for children with special needs.
I have some contacts at the local Bridgewater High school so I will
    start looking there.
